Most nuclear CVs undersell the work.

Nuclear CVs are read by people who know the work. That is an advantage if the document is specific, and a problem if it is not. Almost every CV we see is stronger than it appears, because the things a reviewer needs are present but buried.

Read by a specialist, not a screen

Somewhere in the chain a chartered engineer or a head of safety will read this. They are not scanning for buzzwords. They are working out whether you have done the specific thing they need doing.

Filtered by software first

Before that, most applications pass through a tracking system. Heavy formatting, columns and text inside graphics routinely get mangled, and a strong candidate disappears without anyone reading a word.

Compared against a licence condition

For many roles the hiring manager has to justify the appointment against a formal requirement. Give them the evidence to do that and you make saying yes easy.

What a reviewer looks for, in order.

Five things, checked roughly in this sequence, usually inside the first thirty seconds. If the first two are not obvious, the other three rarely get read.

Scope, not job title

Two people with the same title can be a decade apart in real accountability. The first thing a reviewer hunts for is what you personally owned, decided and signed off.

Plant type and technology

PWR, BWR, AGR, CANDU, VVER, HTGR. Naming the technology you worked on is the fastest way for a reviewer to judge whether your experience transfers to their site.

Lifecycle stage

Design, construction, commissioning, operations, outage, defuelling, decommissioning. The same discipline behaves completely differently at each stage.

Regulatory regime

Which regulator assessed your work and under what framework. Experience under one regime does not automatically read across to another, and reviewers check this early.

Evidence of outcome

Whether the submission was accepted, the system was commissioned, the outage completed. Activity without outcome is the most common gap on an otherwise strong CV.

One word decides how senior you look.

The verb you attach to a piece of work tells a nuclear reviewer exactly where you sat in the chain. Choosing the wrong one is the single most common reason a technically strong person fails a panel.

Authored
You wrote it and your name is on it
The strongest claim. Expect to be asked about the assumptions you made and why.
Approved
You held the authority to accept it
Signals seniority and a formal role in the safety or design chain.
Reviewed
You checked someone else's work
Valuable, but a different job. Presenting it as authorship is the fastest way to fail a technical panel.
Supported
You contributed under someone else's ownership
Honest and perfectly respectable. Say what your specific contribution was.
Managed
You were accountable for delivery, not the technical content
Make clear whether the technical accountability sat with you or with someone reporting to you.

Be accurate rather than generous. Nuclear is small enough that claims get checked, and overstating scope is far more damaging than stating a modest one clearly.

How to lay it out.

This order works because it front loads the things a reviewer checks first. Each section earns the next one being read.

Header and eligibility

Name, location, contact, nationality or right to work where it is relevant to the roles you are targeting. Keep it to three lines. Reviewers should never hunt for this.

Two or three line summary

Discipline, years, plant types, lifecycle stages and regimes. This is the single highest value paragraph on the document and most people waste it on adjectives.

Technical competencies

The specific things you can do, named the way the industry names them. Safety case authoring, criticality assessment, outage planning, remote handling. Not soft skills.

Experience, most recent first

For each role: the organisation, the plant or programme, the technology, your actual scope, and the outcome. Three to six bullets each, weighted towards the last ten years.

Qualifications and professional status

Degrees, chartership, professional body membership, and any formal authorisations you hold. State the awarding body and the year.

Training and courses

Only where they are load bearing for the roles you want. A long list of generic courses dilutes the strong entries.

Six things that quietly cost interviews.

Describing the project instead of yourself

Three paragraphs on the station and one line on what you did. Reviewers are assessing you, not the asset.

Hiding the technology

If a reviewer cannot tell within ten seconds which reactor types you have worked on, they will assume none of them are relevant.

Undated and unquantified claims

Say when, for how long, and at what scale. Vague seniority reads as inflated seniority.

One CV for every application

A new build programme and a decommissioning site want different halves of your history leading. The order should change even if the content does not.

Acronyms without context

Site specific acronyms mean nothing to a reviewer at another licensee. Spell them out the first time, every time.

Burying the last ten years

Early career detail crowding out recent work is the most common structural fault we see.

Questions about nuclear CVs.

Two to three pages for most mid career and senior people, and there is more tolerance for three here than in other industries because technical detail genuinely matters. What kills a CV is not length, it is length without specifics.
Structure matters far more than styling. Anything with heavy graphics, columns or tables risks being parsed badly by applicant tracking systems, which is where most applications are read first. Clean headings and plain text survive that process best.
Usually yes. Contract reviewers care about immediate availability, day rate expectations, and whether you have done this exact task before. Permanent reviewers care about trajectory and how you will grow into the role.
Describe your scope, discipline and outcomes without disclosing anything commercially sensitive or protectively marked. If in doubt, describe the type of work rather than the specific finding, and never name a vulnerability.
