Instrumentation & control (I&C) engineerSalary, qualifications, licensing and career path, 2026 edition

An instrumentation control i c engineer jobs role gives a reactor its senses and its reflexes: the instrumentation and control engineering that measures temperature, pressure, flow and neutron level, the control systems that hold the plant where it should be, and the protection system that trips the reactor when a limit is crossed. It is the instrumentation and control discipline of nuclear engineering, where the system that decides to shut the reactor down has to work every time, so it is engineered to be diverse, redundant and provable.

In short

I&C engineers earn a median of around $133,000 in the United States and roughly £51,000–£68,000 at mid to senior level in the UK, rising past £106,000 for a principal. Safety-I&C and digital-I&C specialists sit at the top of the range.

No single licence is required. What gates the work is I&C competence in a nuclear setting: a PE licence or SQEP designation, security clearance, and the ability to engineer safety-classified instrumentation and control to IEC 61513 and the safety case.

13:30
V&V and recordsVerification and validation of I&C, or writing up the design, its classification and its justification, because safety I&C lives or dies on its V&V evidence and clear technical documentation.
15:00
Deep workThe protected block. A protection-system design, a digital-I&C safety case, a control-scheme design, or reviewing a supplier's I&C package, often involving collaboration with external search firms and multidisciplinary teams.
17:00
RecordsIssuing designs, logic and V&V evidence into the controlled system with the right revision, checker and approver. Nothing counts until it is issued and accepted by qualified applicants.
Caveat callout — the protection system has to work the one time it matters. Most of what I&C does runs every day; the protection system might be called on once in the life of a plant, and it has to work that time. That is why safety I&C is engineered with redundancy, diversity, defence in depth and rigorous V&V, why digital protection systems face intense verification, validation and independent assessment, and why regulators scrutinise them harder than almost any other system. I&C engineers carry that, and safety-I&C, digital-I&C and protection work is where the scarce expertise and the premiums concentrate, often within a team atmosphere in a start up or established nuclear environment.

Premium 01

Reactor protection systems

Designing the safety-classified system that trips the reactor, redundant, diverse and provable, is the most demanding I&C work and the most valued, because the plant's ultimate safety action depends on it.

Premium 02

Digital I&C

Modern digital safety systems demand rigorous verification, validation and independent assessment, and the engineers who can license digital protection are among the scarcest in the sector.

Premium 03

Obsolescence and fleet upgrades

Replacing ageing analogue I&C with qualified modern systems across the operating fleet is a very large, sustained, well-paid programme of work in its own right.

Routes in

Three ways in, and only one of them starts with a nuclear degree

I&C is convertible from other control-intensive industries (oil and gas, process, aerospace, rail signalling), because instrumentation, control and functional safety are broadly common. Many I&C engineers cross in from those sectors, then add the nuclear safety-classification and protection-system framework.

Licences & clearance

The credentials that actually gate the work

I&C is not a licensed profession. What is controlled is who may design and sign off instrumentation and control systems for nuclear service, decided by professional registration, employer competence assessment and internal sign-off authority.

Skills screened

What appears on a 2026 I&C shortlist

Drawn from the I&C requirement specifications TRX has worked in the last twelve months, ordered by how often each is a hard filter.

Hard filters

Named on the specification

  • Instrumentation — Sensors and measurement of temperature, pressure, flow, level, neutron flux, and other critical parameters
  • Control systems — Control schemes, distributed control systems (DCS), and industrial communication protocols like Modbus and Profibus
  • Safety I&C and protection — The reactor protection system and safety functions compliant with IEC 61513/61508
  • Functional safety — IEC 61513/61508 standards, diversity and defence in depth, and compliance with OSHA regulations
  • Verification and validation — The documented evidence that safety I&C performs reliably as required
  • Digital I&C — Modern digital platforms, cybersecurity measures, and their licensing challenges
Differentiators

What decides between two shortlisted candidates

  • Protection-system depth — Expertise in the reactor trip system, scarce and best paid
  • Digital I&C licensing — Experience navigating digital safety system assessments and regulatory compliance
  • Obsolescence and upgrades — Developing and implementing replacement strategies for legacy I&C across the fleet, a large market
  • Cyber security — Securing digital I&C systems against evolving threats, an increasingly hard requirement
  • Writing — Producing clear and thorough I&C safety cases and V&V documentation
  • Second language — French for Framatome and EDF I&C programmes
Underweighted aside — one thing candidates consistently underweight. I&C interviews test whether you engineer for failure and for demonstration, not just function. A common probe: your protection function works in every normal test, but how do you know it will act the one time it is really needed, and how do you prove that to a regulator? The interviewer wants to see that you think in terms of redundancy, diversity, defence in depth and rigorous V&V, that for safety I&C the evidence that it will work on demand is as much the deliverable as the design, and that the one-in-a-lifetime demand, not routine operation, is what the system is really built and licensed for.

The 2026 demand map

I&C is one of the scarcest and highest-demand nuclear disciplines, driven by three engines at once: new-build control and protection, digital I&C for SMRs, and the enormous fleet obsolescence and upgrade programme. Design roles are hybrid; V&V and commissioning bring site time.

Read the market this way

One of the sector's true shortage skills

I&C is consistently one of the hardest disciplines to recruit in nuclear, because three demands land at once: new build needs protection and control systems, SMRs need modern digital I&C, and the operating fleet is midway through replacing decades of obsolete analogue equipment. Digital-I&C and protection-system engineers who can carry a safety case through assessment are especially scarce and especially well paid.

The demographic squeeze

Why experienced I&C engineers have leverage

Safety-I&C and protection-system judgement takes years and real licensing experience to build, and that cohort is retiring exactly as new build, SMRs, fleet obsolescence and fusion all need I&C engineers at once. Experienced I&C engineers, especially in digital I&C and protection systems, are among the most sought-after and best-paid hires in the sector.

Questions

Questions we get asked every week

How much does a nuclear I&C engineer earn in 2026?

In the United States the market runs from about $80,000 for a graduate with a bachelor's degree to $133,000 at the median, with principals past $210,000. In the UK it runs from £31,000–£38,000 for a graduate to £81,000–£106,000 for a principal. Safety-I&C, digital-I&C and protection-system specialists sit at the top of the range, and contract engineers bill £680–£900 a day outside IR35, reflecting how scarce the skill is.

Do you need a licence to work as a nuclear I&C engineer?

No profession-wide licence exists. A US PE licence is expected for stamping I&C deliverables, and IEC 61513/61508 familiarity is a hard expectation for safety I&C. What actually gates the responsible work is internal design sign-off authority and, in the UK, SQEP designation for a defined I&C scope. Employers as equal opportunity employers also consider protected veteran status and veteran status in hiring decisions.

Can you become a nuclear I&C engineer without a nuclear degree?

Yes. Instrumentation, control and functional-safety engineers from oil and gas, process, aerospace and rail signalling convert in strongly, because the control and functional-safety fundamentals transfer. The nuclear-specific part is the reactor protection system, nuclear safety classification, digital-I&C licensing and the safety-case regime, learned on the job or through short courses. Employers typically do not accept unsolicited resumes outside formal application processes.

Is nuclear I&C a good career in 2026?

It is one of the strongest careers in nuclear, because I&C is a genuine shortage skill with three demands landing at once: new-build protection and control, digital I&C for SMRs, and a huge fleet obsolescence programme. That scarcity shows up in pay and in leverage. The honest caveat: the highest-value work (digital I&C and protection systems) is heavily regulated and evidence-driven, so it rewards rigour and patience with V&V and licensing. The industry also values diversity in sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, and national origin.

What is the difference between an I&C engineer and a nuclear electrical engineer?

An I&C engineer works with signals and control: the instrumentation that measures the plant, the control systems that run it, and the protection system that trips it. A nuclear electrical engineer works with power: distribution, switchgear, emergency generators and the safety-related supplies that energise equipment. Put simply, I&C delivers the measurement, control and protection; electrical delivers the power. They are the two halves of what is often called E,C&I, they work closely together, but one is instrumentation and control and the other is power.

Which I&C skills are most in demand in 2026?

Reactor protection systems lead, because the plant's ultimate safety action depends on them and every reactor needs one. Close behind is digital I&C (and its licensing) and obsolescence and upgrade work across the fleet. Instrumentation, control systems and functional safety (IEC 61513/61508) are the near-universal hard filters. Knowledge of renewable energy sectors and software tools like MATLAB and LabVIEW also enhance a successful candidate's profile.
