Internal dosimetry analystSalary, qualifications, career path and hiring demand, 2026 edition

An internal dosimetry analyst works out what happened inside someone's body: interpreting bioassay samples and whole body counts to determine whether radioactive material was taken in, how much, when, and what committed dose it will deliver over the decades it remains there. It is the most technical corner of medical dosimetry, built on biokinetic models rather than direct measurement, and it matters most where contamination can be inhaled or ingested, playing a pivotal role in radiation oncology and clinical research settings.

In short

Internal dosimetry analysts earn a median of around $122,000 in the United States and roughly £52,000–£68,000 when established in the UK, rising past £100,000 for a principal. Actinide assessment and dose reconstruction specialists sit at the top of the range, particularly in radiation therapy procedures and medical dosimetrist roles.

No individual licence is required. What gates the work is analytical competence: a physics or radiochemistry background, security clearance, and assessments that have withstood scrutiny in patient measurements and treatment planning casework.

What the job is

Six versions of the same job title

"Internal dosimetry analyst" changes with what can be taken in: plutonium and actinides at a fuel-cycle plant, mixed fission products during decommissioning, or activation products at a reactor. Note the top segment: internal dose matters most where material is in a form that can be inhaled. Meter = relative hiring volume across TRX's 2026 desk activity.

Fuel handling & fuel cycle

Intake assessment at fuel-cycle plants: routine bioassay programmes, actinide assessment, and casework when contamination incidents occur. Actinides are the hardest case because they are difficult to measure and deliver committed dose over decades. Sellafield, Urenco, Orano.

ROLESInternal dosimetry analyst · actinide assessment specialist · bioassay analyst

Decommissioning & dismantling

Internal dosimetry for decommissioning workforces, where cutting and demolition disturb contamination and create airborne material, making intakes a genuine and recurring risk. Sellafield, Magnox fleet.

ROLESInternal dosimetry analyst (decommissioning) · intake assessment specialist

Operating fleet

Internal dosimetry at operating stations, where intakes are less common but bioassay programmes run continuously and incidents require prompt assessment. US fleet, EDF UK fleet.

ROLESInternal dosimetry analyst · bioassay programme analyst

Radioactive waste management

Assessment for waste handling and treatment workforces, particularly where waste is processed in forms that can become airborne.

ROLESInternal dosimetry analyst (waste) · intake assessment analyst

Nuclear medicine

Internal dosimetry in medical settings, including staff intakes from isotope handling and, distinctly, patient internal dosimetry for radiopharmaceutical therapy.

ROLESMedical internal dosimetrist · radiopharmaceutical dosimetry analyst

Large new build

Establishing bioassay and internal dosimetry arrangements before a new plant begins radiological operations. Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C.

11:00
Biokinetic modellingApplying biokinetic models that describe radionuclide behaviour within the body and excretion pathways, enabling conversion of a single measurement into a committed dose figure over time, a vital role in radiation dosimetry.
12:30
Case investigationFor suspected intakes, gathering contextual information such as work performed, radiation treatment materials present, protective measures worn, and consistency of data with the exposure scenario.
14:00
Laboratory interfaceCollaborating with the analytical laboratory on bioassay sample results, understanding detection limits, and distinguishing genuine results from artefacts, ensuring accuracy.
15:00
Deep workA protected block for complex intake casework, dose reconstruction, quality assurance checks, or reviewing radiopharmaceutical dosimetry assessments, often involving collaboration with other members of the radiation oncology team.
17:00
RecordsIssuing dose assessments into individual dose records. Committed dose figures contribute to lifelong dose histories and require strict adherence to guidelines and good clinical practices.
You are inferring an event from its aftermath, sometimes long afterwards. External dosimetry measures dose as it is received. Internal dosimetry does the opposite: it measures what remains in the body afterwards and infers backward to an intake that may have happened days or months earlier, using models of how material behaves biologically in normal tissues and normal organs. The answer depends on assumptions about particle size, chemical form and timing, none of which are usually known precisely. That is why internal dosimetry is judgement-heavy, why two analysts can reach different figures from the same data, and why the reasoning must be documented as carefully as the result.

Premium 01

Actinide assessment

Plutonium and other actinides are hard to detect, deliver dose over decades, and produce the most technically demanding assessments in the field.

Premium 02

Complex intake casework

Cases with uncertain timing, mixed nuclides or contested circumstances require judgement that routine screening does not build.

Premium 03

Dose reconstruction

Reconstructing historic intakes, often for health claims or epidemiology, is highly specialised and frequently scrutinised.

Routes in

Three ways in, and only one of them starts with a nuclear degree

Internal dosimetry is entered from physics, radiochemistry or general dosimetry practice, and it is the main specialisation route within the dosimetry discipline. Modelling capability distinguishes it.

Route A

From dosimetry, UK

Four to eight years to established.

Year 0Bachelor's degree or MSc in physics, radiochemistry or radiation scienceMathematical, biokinetic modelling, and radiation dose calculation capability matters most.
Year 0–3General dosimetry practiceLearning external dosimetry, dose calculation, dose records, and quality systems first.
Year 3–5Internal dosimetry trainingBioassay interpretation, whole body counting, imaging, and the biokinetic models, which is the specialisation step critical for calculating doses and committed dose assessments.
Year 5–7Independent caseworkHandling intake assessment, dose reconstruction, and complex clinical trials casework without supervision, including incident cases.
Year 7+Senior or principal analystTaking the complex and contested cases, reviewing others' work, providing guidance, and assisting radiation oncologists and physicians.
Route B

US route

Four to eight years.

Year 0BS or MS in health physics, physics, or related educationHealth physics degrees frequently cover internal dosimetry and radiation oncology dosimetry directly.
Year 0–3Health physics or dosimetry practiceAt a laboratory, utility, clinical trials, or DOE contractor.
Year 3–6Internal dosimetry specialisationDOE sites and national laboratories run the largest internal dosimetry programmes, focusing on calculating doses and committed dose.
Year 5–8ABHP certificationBoard certification, valued and often expected at senior level, including continuing education.
SpecialiseActinide assessment, dose reconstruction, radiopharmaceutical dosimetry, or programme leadership
Route C

Career changer

Twelve months to three years.

Step 1From radiochemistryAnalytical radiochemists convert well, since bioassay interpretation rests on sample analysis they already understand, including diagnostic and clinical trials samples.
Step 2From general dosimetryThe most common route, adding biokinetic modelling depth, radiation dose calculation, and clinical trials experience to established dosimetry practice.
Step 3Learn the biokinetic modelsThese models describe radionuclide behaviour within the body and excretion pathways and are key to calculating committed dose accurately.
Step 4Enter through fuel cycle or decommissioningBoth sectors run substantial internal dosimetry programmes with regular intake assessment casework involving radiation oncologists and certified medical dosimetrists.
Step 5SpecialiseActinide assessment, where the technical difficulty and salary premium concentrate, making all the difference in career progression and benefiting patients with thyroid cancer and other diseases.

Skills screened

What appears on a 2026 internal dosimetry shortlist

Drawn from the internal dosimetry requirement specifications TRX has worked in the last twelve months, ordered by how often each is a hard filter.

Hard filters

Named on the specification

  • Bioassay interpretation — What excretion data indicates about an intake
  • Whole body counting — Direct measurement and its geometry and calibration effects
  • Biokinetic models — The models describing uptake, retention and excretion
  • Committed dose calculation — Converting intake into dose delivered over time
  • Radionuclide behaviour — Chemical form, solubility class and route of intake
  • Statistics and uncertainty — Expressing what the data actually supports
Differentiators

What decides between two shortlisted candidates

  • Actinide assessment — The hardest nuclides to detect and assess
  • Complex casework — Uncertain timing, mixed nuclides, contested circumstances
  • Dose reconstruction — Historic assessment from incomplete information
  • Modelling software — The specialist codes used for intake assessment
  • Writing — The reasoning must be defensible years later
  • Discretion — Assessments concern individuals and have personal consequences
One thing candidates consistently underweight. Internal dosimetry analyst interviews test whether you question the assumed intake time. A common probe: a bioassay result indicates an intake, so how do you calculate the committed dose? The interviewer wants to see that you recognise the answer depends heavily on when the intake occurred and in what chemical form, that assuming a recent intake of a soluble form can change the assessed dose by an order of magnitude compared with an older insoluble one, and that establishing the circumstances is as important as running the biokinetic models. This judgement is central to internal dosimetry analyst career development and the life-changing assistance provided to patients diagnosed with radiation exposure or tumors in hospital settings.

Read the market this way

A very small but critical specialism with disproportionate importance.

Internal dosimetry is one of the smallest specialisms covered on this site, but it carries significant weight because committed dose figures enter permanent dose records and can be the subject of health claims decades later. Demand concentrates at fuel-cycle facilities and decommissioning programmes where intakes are a live risk, and the analytical difficulty of actinide assessment means the capable pool is genuinely small. This role involves responsibilities that vary based on the chemical form and intake route of radioactive materials, requiring deep expertise in biokinetic models and related field knowledge to ensure accurate dose assessments and regulatory compliance. Resources for training and progress in this niche are limited, making company support essential for career advancement.

The demographic squeeze

Why internal dosimetry analysts are hard to replace.

The role requires physics or radiochemistry, biokinetic modelling capability and casework judgement, built over years and practised in relatively few organisations worldwide. As decommissioning increases the population of workers at risk of intakes and experienced analysts retire from services that have run for decades, this is among the harder radiological specialisms to recruit into. The need to advance expertise in internal dosimetry is critical for treating patients exposed to radioactive substances, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and supporting drug and radiopharmaceutical safety assessments. This career path often attracts candidates with advanced degrees such as a PhD, reflecting the technical complexity and importance of the role in the nuclear and medical fields.

Questions

Questions we get asked every week

How much does an internal dosimetry analyst earn in 2026?

In the United States the market runs from about $81,000 for a trainee to $122,000 at the median, with principals past $190,000. In the UK, established analysts earn £52,000–£68,000, rising past £100,000 for a principal. Actinide assessment and dose reconstruction specialists sit at the top of the range, and contract analysts bill £640–£860 a day outside IR35 for complex casework.

Do you need a qualification to work in internal dosimetry?

No individual licence exists. In the UK, formal approval applies to the dosimetry service rather than the person. What gates individual work is demonstrated assessment competence and biokinetic modelling capability, assessed by the employer. ABHP certification is valued in the US.

Can you become an internal dosimetry analyst without a nuclear background?

Yes, though it takes time. Radiochemists convert well because bioassay rests on analytical chemistry they already understand, and physicists with modelling capability enter directly. The specific content to learn is the biokinetic models and how chemical form, particle size and intake route change the answer, which takes real practice to apply confidently.

Is internal dosimetry a good career in 2026?

It is a small but technically distinctive specialism with concentrated demand at fuel-cycle and decommissioning programmes, and the capable pool is genuinely limited. The honest caveat: it is a narrow field with few posts, the work is analytical and largely desk-based, and progression usually means becoming the person who handles the hardest cases rather than moving into management.

What is the difference between an internal dosimetry analyst and a dosimetry specialist?

A dosimetry specialist covers the full dosimetry function: processing external dosimeters, maintaining dose records, investigating anomalies and handling internal dosimetry among other duties. An internal dosimetry analyst specialises entirely in intakes: interpreting bioassay and whole body counting, applying biokinetic models, and assessing committed dose from material taken into the body. Put simply, one runs the dosimetry programme and the other is the specialist within it who handles the hardest technical part. Internal dosimetry is the main specialisation route from general dosimetry practice, and it requires modelling capability that external dosimetry does not.

Which internal dosimetry skills are most in demand in 2026?

Actinide assessment leads by a clear margin, because plutonium and similar nuclides are hard to detect and deliver dose over decades, making them the most demanding assessments in the field. Close behind is complex casework and dose reconstruction. Bioassay interpretation, whole body counting and biokinetic modelling are the near-universal hard filters.
