Rigger (nuclear)Salary, qualifications, contract rates and hiring demand, 2026 edition

A nuclear rigger moves things that cannot be dropped. Slinging loads correctly, choosing the right equipment for the weight and shape, directing crane movements and getting components into position in spaces that were not designed for them. On a nuclear site that includes reactor components, shielded flasks and plant being removed from facilities where access was never planned.

What the job is

Six versions of the same job title

"Nuclear rigger" changes with the load: construction lifts on new build, component handling during an outage, or removing plant from a facility being dismantled. Note decommissioning runs close to new build, because taking things out is as much rigging as putting them in. Bar shows relative hiring volume across TRX's 2026 desk activity.

A working day

What the shift actually looks like

A composite day for a nuclear rigger on a construction site, outage or campaign. Physical, weather-exposed, and paced by the lifts themselves. Critical lifts change the day entirely — noted below.

06:45
Lift briefingThe day's lifts, the lift plans, the equipment required, exclusion zones and who is doing what.
07:30
Equipment checksInspecting slings, shackles, chains and lifting accessories before use, and confirming certification is current. Damaged equipment is where lifting incidents start.
08:15
Rigging the loadAttaching to the load correctly for its weight, shape and centre of gravity, which is the judgement at the heart of the trade.
10:00
The liftDirecting the crane, controlling the load, watching for snagging and keeping people clear. The rigger has the view the crane operator does not.
13:00
PositioningLanding loads precisely, often into tight spaces where a few millimetres matter.
15:00
Continued liftsRepeating through the day's programme, which on a busy construction site can be many lifts per shift.
17:00
Equipment and recordsReturning and inspecting equipment, and recording lifts where required.
The rigger stops the lift, and that authority is real. Riggers are positioned where they can see what the crane operator cannot: the load, the landing area and the people around it. That is why the rigger controls the lift through signals and why any rigger can stop it at any point. Using that authority is expected rather than exceptional, and on nuclear sites where loads may be irreplaceable or contaminated, a rigger who hesitates to stop a lift they are uneasy about is in the wrong trade.

Premium 01

Critical and heavy lift work

Lifts involving irreplaceable or very heavy components require the most experienced riggers and pay accordingly.

Premium 02

Lift supervisor or appointed person qualification

Moving from performing lifts to directing them is the largest single step in earnings.

Premium 03

Decommissioning campaigns

Removing plant with uncertain weight and centre of gravity, in contaminated conditions, commands a premium.

Routes in

Three ways in, and one of them is open to everyone

Rigging has the shortest entry route of the trades covered here. Qualification takes weeks rather than years, which makes it one of the fastest ways onto a nuclear site with a recognised skill.

Route A

Direct entry, United Kingdom

One to three years to qualified.

Skills screened

What appears on a 2026 rigging shortlist

Drawn from nuclear rigging specifications TRX has worked in the last twelve months. Ordered by how often a hiring manager treats it as a hard filter rather than a nice-to-have.

Hard filters

Named on the specification

  • Slinging and rigging — Attaching loads correctly for weight and shape
  • Lifting equipment — Slings, shackles, chains, beams and their limits
  • Load assessment — Weight, centre of gravity and how a load will behave
  • Crane signalling — Clear, unambiguous direction of lifting operations
  • Lift plans — Working to a documented plan and knowing when it no longer applies
  • Equipment inspection — Checking accessories before every use
Differentiators

What decides between two shortlisted candidates

  • Critical lift experience — Irreplaceable loads with no second chance
  • Lift supervisor qualification — Directing rather than performing lifts
  • Decommissioning rigging — Uncertain loads in contaminated conditions
  • Confined and congested area work — Lifting where there is no room
  • Existing clearance — Starting now rather than in two months
  • Reliability — Campaign work runs on reputation
One thing candidates consistently underweight. Rigging interviews test whether you question the stated weight. A common probe: the paperwork says the load is four tonnes and your equipment is rated for six, so are you ready to lift? The interviewer wants to hear that you check where that weight came from, particularly on decommissioning work, because stated weights on old plant are frequently estimates, items retain more material than expected, and riggers who lift on an unverified figure are the reason overload incidents happen.

Read the market this way

The fastest skilled route onto a nuclear site

Rigging qualification takes weeks rather than the years an apprenticeship requires, which makes it the quickest way to enter nuclear with a recognised skill. Certifications are also portable between sites, unlike most plant qualifications, so riggers move more freely than other trades. For anyone wanting into the industry quickly, this is the shortest path available.

The demographic squeeze

Supervision is where the shortage bites

Riggers themselves are recruitable, but lift supervisors and appointed persons are not, because that role requires years of lifting experience plus formal qualification. With Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C and the decommissioning estate all running lifting operations simultaneously, qualified lift supervisors are considerably scarcer than riggers and command a substantial premium.

Questions

Questions we get asked every week

How much does a nuclear rigger earn in 2026?

As staff, riggers earn from about $66,000 as a trainee to $92,000 at the median in the US, and £41,000–£54,000 once qualified in the UK, rising to £80,000 as a lift supervisor.

Contract riggers bill £290–£420 a day, and £370–£520 for critical lift, heavy lift and campaign work.

What qualifications do you need to be a nuclear rigger?

Slinger signaller certification to start, then progressive rigger qualifications. For directing lifting operations you need lift supervisor or appointed person certification, which is the major earnings step.

You also need site induction, radiological training for controlled area work, and security clearance.

Can you become a nuclear rigger without experience?

Yes, and it is the fastest skilled entry into the industry covered on this site. Unlike the apprenticed trades, rigging certification takes weeks rather than years.

Riggers from construction, offshore, ports and heavy industry transfer directly, and complete newcomers can qualify and start relatively quickly, with clearance usually the main wait.

Is nuclear rigging a good career in 2026?

Demand is strong across new build, outages and decommissioning simultaneously, entry is fast, and lifting certifications are portable between sites, which gives riggers unusual mobility.

The honest caveat: it sits toward the lower end of the site trades in pay, the work is physical and weather-exposed, and progression really means getting lift supervisor qualified.

What is the difference between a rigger and a heavy lift engineer?

A heavy lift engineer plans lifting operations: crane selection, rigging design, ground bearing, lift plans and the engineering behind a lift. A rigger performs it: attaching the load, selecting and inspecting equipment, directing the crane and landing the load safely.

Put simply, the engineer designs the lift and the rigger executes it. On critical lifts both are involved, with the engineer's plan defining what the rigging team does on the day.

What decides who gets nuclear rigging work in 2026?

Certification level decides most of it, particularly whether you hold lift supervisor or appointed person qualification. Existing clearance comes next, since it determines when you can start.

Critical lift experience, decommissioning work and reliability are the near-universal differentiators.
