Structural integrity engineerSalary, qualifications, licensing and career path, 2026 edition

A structural integrity engineer answers the question the whole safety case rests on: will this structural engineering component maintain soundness for its life, even with a flaw in it? It is the fitness-for-service discipline of nuclear and civil engineering, pulling stress, fracture, materials and environmental degradation into one argument that a high-integrity component will not fail. Where others qualify a design, the integrity engineer proves it survives ageing, defects and time, ensuring stability and signs the argument that lets a plant run.

In short

Structural integrity engineers earn a median of around $133,000 in the United States and roughly £51,000–£68,000 at mid to senior level in the UK, rising past £106,000 for an integrity authority. High-integrity-component and defect-assessment specialists sit at the top of the range.

No single licence is required. What gates the work is integrity competence: a PE licence or SQEP designation, security clearance, and the ability to build a fitness-for-service case integrating stress, fracture, materials and degradation.

08:15
Assessment reviewReviewing a fitness-for-service assessment: the stresses, the assumed defect, the fracture and fatigue arguments, and whether the margins hold. Structural integrity engineer jobs require integrating several disciplines' results into one judgement.
09:15
Defect assessmentA flaw indication has been found in service, or postulated for design, so you assess it: will it grow, will it reach a critical size, and does the component remain fit for service under its loads? This is the heart of the discipline (R6, ASME XI, BS 7910), essential duties in this position.
10:45
Integrating the inputsBringing together stress analysis, materials properties, degradation rates and fracture data into a coherent integrity argument, because no single one of them is the answer; the integrity case is their synthesis, a key focus of structural integrity engineers.
12:00
Safety-case interfaceWorking with the safety case and the licensing team, because a high-integrity-component argument, sometimes an incredibility-of-failure claim, is a load-bearing part of how a plant is licensed to operate. Communication with employees and regulators is critical.
13:30
Case authoringWriting the integrity case as issued evidence: the claim, the argument, the supporting analysis and data, and the margins, to a standard a regulator will agree and regard as quality work.
15:00
Deep workThe protected block. A defect-assessment calculation, a life-assessment study, a high-integrity-component justification, or reviewing a colleague's integrity case, often requiring specialized equipment and software such as ANSYS or MATLAB.
17:00
RecordsIssuing integrity assessments and cases into the controlled system with the right revision, checker and approver. Nothing counts until it is issued, ensuring compliance with company policies and quality standards.
Caveat callout — integrity is an argument, not just a number. The distinctive demand of structural integrity is judgement: not "what is the stress" but "have I built a defensible argument that this component will not fail, even flawed, even aged, over its whole life." That argument integrates stress, fracture, materials and degradation, and it has to convince a regulator that the case is complete and conservative. Engineers who can construct and defend that case, and know where its conservatism really lies, are the ones the safety case depends on, and the reason integrity is a senior, well-paid discipline in employment opportunities that respect education and experience.

Premium 01

High-integrity-component justification

Making the case that a critical component, sometimes to an incredibility-of-failure standard, will not fail is among the most demanding and safety-significant work in the sector, and the standing to own it is scarce.

Premium 02

Defect assessment and fitness-for-service

Assessing real and postulated flaws to R6, R5, ASME XI and BS 7910, and deciding whether a component stays in service, is a specialised, well-paid capability the fleet relies on.

Premium 03

Integrity authority

Being the recognised owner of a component's integrity case, trusted by the licensee and the regulator, is a senior role that commands a clear premium.

Routes in

Three ways in, and only one of them starts with a nuclear degree

Structural integrity builds on a stress, fracture and materials foundation, often with an MSc or PhD, and it is one of the more distinctively nuclear analytical disciplines, especially in the UK, where the R6 procedure and high-integrity-component thinking originated. Many integrity engineers grow from stress or fracture roles.

Route A

Graduate, United Kingdom

Five to nine years to chartered and integrity ownership; an MSc or PhD is a common accelerant.

Year 0MEng or BEng in mechanical, materials or aerospace engineering, accreditedWith strong stress, fracture, and materials fundamentals and equal opportunity employer principles in mind.
Year 0–3Graduate scheme or MSc/PhDFrazer-Nash, Jacobs, Wood, EDF, or a vendor; an MSc or PhD in structural integrity or fracture is common, often including health and safety training and awareness of disability and national origin considerations.
Year 2–4First integrity assessmentYour name on a fitness-for-service or defect assessment that clears independent check. This is the artefact interviewers ask about, demonstrating your ideas and technical skills.
Year 4–6CEng registrationThrough IMechE or IOM3, showing your commitment to professional development and recognition of equivalent experience.
Year 5–9Integrity ownershipOwning an integrity case that clears peer and regulatory review, including managing overtime and balancing work with holidays.
Route B

Graduate, United States

Four to nine years to PE and senior integrity roles.

Year 0ABET-accredited BSMechanical, materials or aerospace engineering. ABET supports the PE route and promotes an inclusive environment regardless of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
Final yearFE exam → Engineer in TrainingSit it before graduating, preparing for career advancement and benefits eligibility.
Year 0–4Vendor, consultancy or utilityReactor vendors, integrity consultancies, or utility engineering. Stress, fracture and ASME XI groups are the classic training ground, often with email communications and co-working across teams.
Year 4+PE licenceFour years under a PE, then the Principles and Practice exam, with opportunities for overtime and leadership roles.
SpecialiseHigh-integrity components, defect assessment and life managementThe premium end with comprehensive benefits and health coverage.
Route C

Career changer

Twelve to thirty months, and the route the sector is actively recruiting for in 2026.

Step 1Bring your stress or fracture experienceStructural integrity, fitness-for-service and fracture from aerospace, oil and gas, or power transfers strongly; the methods (R6, BS 7910, API 579) overlap, supporting those with a master's degree or equivalent qualifications.
Step 2Learn the nuclear frameASME XI, the nuclear safety case, high-integrity-component thinking and the licensing expectations, the part that makes it nuclear and inclusive of all religions and disabilities.
Step 3Add the domainA structural-integrity MSc, or an employer conversion role, to layer nuclear codes and safety-case practice onto your integrity skills, with employer benefits and career development support.
Step 4Enter through a consultancy, vendor or utilityAll value fitness-for-service backgrounds and teach the nuclear specifics, emphasizing equal opportunity employer policies.
Step 5SpecialiseHigh-integrity components and defect assessment, the scarce, best-paid corners, with competitive salary, overtime pay, and comprehensive health benefits.

Licences & clearance

The credentials that actually gate the work

Structural integrity is not a licensed profession. What is controlled is who may own and sign off integrity cases, decided by professional registration, employer competence assessment and the standing a licensee and regulator will accept.

Skills screened

What appears on a 2026 structural integrity shortlist

Drawn from the structural-integrity requirement specifications TRX has worked in the last twelve months, ordered by how often each is a hard filter.

Hard filters

Named on the specification

  • Fitness-for-service assessment — R6, R5, ASME XI, BS 7910 and API 579 methods
  • Defect assessment — Flaw evaluation, crack growth and critical-size judgement
  • Fracture mechanics — Enough to own the fracture argument within the integrity case
  • Stress analysis — The loads and stresses the integrity case is built on
  • Materials and degradation — How properties and degradation feed fitness-for-service
  • Safety-case understanding — How an integrity argument supports licensing and public safety
Differentiators

What decides between two shortlisted candidates

  • High-integrity-component justification — Including incredibility-of-failure arguments, the most demanding work affecting financial costs
  • Integrity-case ownership — The standing to own and defend a case with the regulator
  • Defect-assessment depth — R6 and ASME XI judgement the fleet relies on
  • Integration ability — Pulling stress, fracture, materials and degradation into one argument
  • Writing — An integrity case is, above all, a written, defensible argument
  • Second language — French for CEA, EDF and Framatome integrity programmes
Underweighted aside — one thing candidates consistently underweight. Integrity interviews test whether you can defend an argument, not just run an assessment. A common probe: your fitness-for-service assessment passes, but a regulator questions one of your assumptions. What do you do? The interviewer wants to see that you understand an integrity case is a defensible argument, that you know where its conservatism and its weak points really are, and that you can distinguish a genuinely robust case from one that merely produced an acceptable number, because in integrity the reasoning is the deliverable.

Read the market this way

Integrity is where analysis becomes a safety-case decision

Structural integrity sits at the point where stress, fracture and materials analysis turns into a licensing decision, which makes it senior, safety-significant and well paid. The steadiest demand is the fleet's life-extension and defect-assessment work and new-build high-integrity components; the premium is in owning the integrity case, especially incredibility-of-failure arguments, which few engineers are trusted to do.

The demographic squeeze

Why experienced integrity engineers have leverage

Integrity-case judgement, especially high-integrity-component and defect-assessment standing, takes years to build and is trusted only once earned, and that cohort is retiring as fleet life-extension, new build and advanced reactors all demand integrity cases at once. Experienced structural integrity engineers, especially those trusted to own a case with the regulator, are among the most sought-after analytical hires in the sector.

Questions

Questions we get asked every week

How much does a structural integrity engineer earn in 2026?

In the United States the market runs from about $80,000 for a graduate to $133,000 at the median, with principals and integrity authorities past $210,000. In the UK it runs from £31,000–£38,000 for a graduate to £81,000–£106,000 for an integrity authority. High-integrity-component and defect-assessment specialists sit at the top of the range, and contract engineers bill £660–£880 a day outside IR35 for high-integrity-component and integrity-authority work.

Do you need a licence to work as a structural integrity engineer?

No profession-wide licence exists. A US PE licence is expected for stamping integrity deliverables. What actually gates the responsible work is integrity-case authority, the earned standing a licensee and regulator will accept, and in the UK SQEP designation for a defined integrity scope.

Can you become a structural integrity engineer without a nuclear degree?

Yes. Structural integrity and fitness-for-service engineers from aerospace, oil and gas, and power convert in strongly, because the core methods (R6, BS 7910, API 579) overlap. The nuclear-specific part is ASME XI, the nuclear safety case and high-integrity-component thinking, learned through an MSc or on the job; many integrity engineers also grow from nuclear stress or fracture roles.

Is structural integrity a good career in 2026?

It is a senior, safety-significant and secure discipline, sitting where analysis becomes a licensing decision, with strong demand from fleet life-extension, new build and advanced reactors. The honest caveat: it is analysis- and judgement-heavy and rewards depth (often an MSc or PhD and years of trusted work), so it is more a discipline you grow into than a broad entry route.

What is the difference between a structural integrity engineer and a fracture mechanics engineer?

A structural integrity engineer owns the whole fitness-for-service case: integrating stress, fracture, materials and degradation into one argument that a component stays sound for its life. A fracture mechanics engineer is the deep specialist in one key method within that case: crack driving force, flaw assessment and crack growth. Put simply, fracture mechanics is a critical tool; structural integrity is the argument that uses it alongside stress, materials and degradation. Many integrity engineers are strong in fracture, and many fracture specialists broaden into integrity, but one is a method and the other is the case.

Which structural integrity skills are most in demand in 2026?

High-integrity-component justification and defect assessment (R6, ASME XI) lead, because they are the most demanding and safety-significant, and every fleet and new-build programme needs them. Close behind is the integration ability to pull the supporting disciplines into one case. Fitness-for-service methods, fracture and stress fundamentals, and safety-case understanding are the near-universal hard filters.
