Supplier quality engineerSalary, qualifications, career path and hiring demand, 2026 edition

A nuclear supplier quality engineer ensures that components and services procured from external suppliers meet the stringent technical, regulatory, and product quality requirements imposed on them. The role starts with supplier qualification, quality-plan evaluation, and surveillance planning before manufacture, then tracks the item through fabrication, inspection, root cause analysis of non-conformance, resolution of quality issues, records management, and final release. Procurement manages the commercial order; engineering owns the technical specification; the SQE independently verifies that the supplier's processes and evidence comply to ensure compliance for the nuclear product acceptance.

In short

In the US, established nuclear supplier quality engineers typically model around $82,000–$108,000, with senior roles around $95,000–$125,000 and principal specialists moving toward $140,000. Current Westinghouse roles range from $58,400–$73,000 at early-career level to $103,200–$129,000 at principal level. In the UK, established SQEs typically sit around £50,000–£65,000, with current Hinkley Point C supplier-quality hiring around £60,000–£70,000 and Sizewell/Sellafield quality roles in the high-£50,000s.

There is no universal Supplier Quality Engineer licence. The real gates are technical inspection literacy, audit competence, nuclear quality standards, supplier management and the ability to resolve quality issues without weakening requirements. U.S. nuclear hiring frequently screens for NQA-1, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, 10 CFR 21 and ASME Section III. UK new build adds ISO 9001 lead-auditor capability, project quality plans, source inspection, continuous improvement, lifetime records and knowledge of manufacturing processes such as welding, fabrication, coating and NDT.

A working day

What the week actually looks like

A composite day for an SQE supporting an ASME-classified mechanical component under manufacture at a supplier facility. Welding is active, an NCR is open and a hold point is due later in the day.

Supplier facility · typical TuesdaySupplier-site based with 30–50% travel
07:30
Surveillance-plan reviewConfirm the day's manufacturing operations, inspection points, applicable drawings, procedures and witness/hold points. Check that the supplier is working to the current approved revision.
08:30
Shop-floor surveillanceObserve material control, fit-up, welding, machining or inspection activity. Verify personnel qualifications, calibrated equipment, identification and traceability against the quality plan.
10:00
Record reviewReview weld/NDE reports, material certificates, dimensional results and inspection records before accepting completion of the manufacturing step.
11:30
Non-conformance meetingChallenge the supplier's NCR disposition, root cause and proposed corrective action. Confirm engineering approval where use-as-is or repair affects design requirements.
13:30
Supplier audit / assessmentSample the quality-management system against NQA-1, ISO 9001, project procedures or purchase-order requirements and test whether the process is implemented in practice.
15:30
Corrective-action follow-upReview a previous SCAR/CAPA, verify objective evidence and assess whether the action actually prevented recurrence rather than only closing paperwork.
17:00
Surveillance report and release statusDocument findings, update open quality actions and advise procurement/project teams whether the item can move to the next manufacturing stage or remains blocked.
The SQE is not the supplier's inspector. The supplier remains responsible for building and inspecting conforming product. The SQE provides independent oversight on behalf of the customer or project, sampling the supplier's system and product evidence at the points of highest risk. If the SQE starts performing the supplier's quality-control work for them, accountability becomes blurred and the assurance model weakens.

Before you apply

Are you actually ready to compete for a supplier quality engineer role?

A supplier-quality CV should show what you actually assured: component types, codes, supplier locations, audit count, NCR/SCAR ownership, welding/NDE depth, quality plans, witness points and release decisions. "Performed supplier audits" is weak evidence; "qualified and surveilled six ASME Section III suppliers across three countries, closing 22 corrective actions before product release" gives the recruiter something real to benchmark.

Gates

The credentials that actually gate the work

SQE work is competence-gated rather than licensed; the real requirements come from the component code, supplier QA programme, project requirements and the authority granted by the employer.

Auditor certificates help open the door. Employers still test whether the candidate can interpret the applicable code, recognise a manufacturing-quality failure and make a defensible acceptance or escalation decision.

Skills screened

What appears on a 2026 supplier quality engineer shortlist

The shortlist is looking for engineers who can independently assess whether a supplier's system and manufacturing evidence are capable of producing compliant nuclear product. Ordered by how often a hiring manager treats it as a hard filter rather than a nice-to-have.

Hard filters

Named on the specification

  • Supplier qualification and audits — Quality-system evaluations, scope qualification, audit planning, evidence sampling, findings and Qualified Supplier List maintenance
  • Source surveillance and inspection planning — Quality plans, ITPs, witness/hold points, surveillance reports and risk-based oversight at supplier facilities
  • NCR / SCAR / CAPA management — Containment, root cause, correction, corrective action, recurrence prevention and effectiveness verification
  • Nuclear quality standards — NQA-1, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, 10 CFR 21, ISO 9001/19443, ASME Section III or equivalent programme requirements
  • Manufacturing and inspection literacy — Welding, machining, forming, heat treatment, NDE, dimensional inspection, material control and calibration
  • Quality records and product release — Certificates, traceability, manufacturing dossiers, final documentation, deviations and evidence supporting shipment/release
Differentiators

What decides between two shortlisted candidates

  • Heavy forgings / pressure vessels / major mechanical equipment — Scarce experience on components where manufacturing failure carries high safety and programme consequence
  • Lead Auditor authority — Ability to lead nuclear supplier audits rather than only participate as a technical observer
  • International supplier oversight — Experience working across different regulatory cultures, codes and manufacturing bases
  • Supplier recovery and development — Taking a weak supplier through corrective action, process improvement and sustained performance recovery
  • Welding / NDE specialist depth — Practical competence to challenge fabrication evidence beyond document-level quality review
  • New-build nuclear supplier industrialisation — Qualifying suppliers for AP1000, EPR, SMR or advanced-reactor programmes as supply chains scale
One thing candidates consistently underweight. Good supplier quality is not defect hunting. A weak SQE measures success by how many NCRs are found. A strong SQE understands whether the supplier's process is capable of preventing the next one, whether the quality system is actually implemented and whether the evidence supports safe acceptance. The goal is not to catch more defects at final inspection; it is to stop predictable defects being created in the first place.

Read the market this way

Supplier quality is moving upstream

The most valuable SQE work in 2026 is happening before delivery: qualifying suppliers, reviewing quality requirements in purchase orders, defining surveillance plans and intervening at manufacturing hold points. New nuclear programmes cannot afford to discover a major forging, vessel or module problem at site receipt. The economic case for early supplier oversight gets stronger as components become larger, more safety-significant and harder to replace.

The scarcity

Code knowledge plus shop-floor judgement

Many quality engineers can audit ISO 9001. Far fewer can walk into a fabrication shop, understand the welding/NDE or material-control process, connect it to NQA-1 or ASME requirements and decide whether the evidence supports continued manufacture. That technical-assurance crossover is why experienced nuclear SQEs remain difficult to hire even when general quality talent is available.

Questions

Questions we get asked every week

How much does a nuclear supplier quality engineer earn in 2026?

In the US, the TRX model places established supplier quality engineers around $82,000–$108,000, seniors around $95,000–$125,000 and principal specialists around $110,000–$140,000. Current Westinghouse roles run from $58,400–$73,000 at early-career level to $103,200–$129,000 at principal level.

In the UK, established SQEs typically model around £50,000–£65,000; current Hinkley Point C supplier quality engineer hiring is around £60,000–£70,000.

What is the difference between a supplier quality engineer and a quality engineer?

A general Quality Engineer may support internal project, manufacturing or construction quality across many processes within the company.

A Supplier Quality Engineer specifically assures external suppliers: qualification, audits, surveillance, non-conformance, corrective action, manufacturing records and release. On major nuclear projects the roles overlap, but SQE work normally involves much more travel and direct responsibility for the external supply base.

Do you need NQA-1 experience for supplier quality roles?

Not for every role. U.S. safety-related nuclear supplier work frequently requires or strongly prefers NQA-1, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B and 10 CFR 21 knowledge. UK projects may place more emphasis on ISO 9001, project quality requirements, supply-chain surveillance and relevant nuclear codes.

If the employer is buying ASME Section III safety-related components, practical NQA-1/ASME experience becomes a major filter.

How much travel does a supplier quality engineer do?

More than most project quality engineers. Current Westinghouse roles commonly specify 30–50% domestic/international travel, and some principal EMEA surveillance roles reach 50–75%.

Travel depends on the supplier portfolio: an SQE responsible for global heavy equipment may spend significant time at factories, while a site-based supplier-quality role may travel less.

Which qualifications are most useful for nuclear supplier quality?

ISO 9001 Lead Auditor or CQI/IRCA recognition is valuable in the UK, while NQA-1 Lead Auditor is particularly useful in U.S. nuclear supply chains. ASQ CQE can strengthen broader quality credibility.

Welding, NDE and pressure-equipment qualifications help for fabrication-heavy scopes, but there is no single certificate that replaces practical audit, manufacturing and supplier-resolution experience.

Where is supplier quality demand strongest in 2026?

Westinghouse AP1000/APX supply-chain expansion is one of the clearest U.S. markets, with live SQE roles covering ASME materials and major mechanical equipment. Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C remain strong UK markets.

Natrium, AP1000 Poland, Sellafield and expanding advanced-fuel manufacturing provide additional demand for engineers who can qualify and surveil nuclear suppliers.
